About Lisa

Lisa SchlingermanArt is significant in my life. My mother was an artist and our home was full of beautiful images that captivated me. I was given permission to be creative. Art was a way to share myself with others, give meaning to my experiences and to play.

My artistic abilities came in handy growing up working for recreational programs in the city. Art was a wonderful way for children to spend time together because it isn’t competitive and uses a universal language. I loved being with children and decided on pursuing education.

As a Montessori teacher, I learned how to organize and present lessons to groups of children. I created an environment where the children worked independently with materials, had time to explore art techniques, and took care of the art tools. This atmosphere evoked genuine expression from the children and pride in what they created.

I read a book by Edith Kramer, founder of the American Art Therapy movement, about her experiences doing art with children. I learned about art therapy. I returned to school and received an M.A. in Human Development from St Mary’s in Minneapolis.

In graduate school, I explored my own personal expression with a variety of mediums and art therapy techniques and kept a visual journal using the mandala. I noticed that I used similar shapes, lines, colours and patterns in my mandala creations during this time. I was discovering my ARTSelf.

Lisa SchlingermanI began creating ARTSelf experiences for children, and adults that support creative growth. ARTSelf honours art as a source of truth and wisdom and is often a means to satisfying a life long yearning.

Children with autism and people having challenges with living benefit having me guide them in their artistic process. I want to help children and adults reach out and make contact with the world. I do this by focusing on building confidence with art materials, assisting in solving art making challenges and taking safe risks that will evoke authentic expression.

Practicing expressive art therapy combines my abilities as an artist, therapist, and teacher. I experience expressive art therapy as a creative venture, which can be accomplished artistically. I derive satisfaction helping others in an artistic and creative way.
